AED 322 assignment #2 locating self as teacher

What are five things that are really important that you hope your students learn from you as a teacher in this imagined teaching context in 2025 or beyond?

The 5 things I thought would be important were

1. Teaching a broad range of different medias and techniques
2. Advancing on the students art skills
3. Concentrating on the feelings created by works, creating pieces, and how to channel your emotions into your work
4. Discussing influential artists and works
5. Teaching students that art is a learned skill and that if they try it and work at it they can work in any media

What influenced me to want to teach a broad spectrum of medias and techniques was coming to college and finding that I didn't have experience with as many media as I had originally thought. There are many medias that I have absolutely no experience with and I believe that it is holding me back as an artist. This ties in with the second item on my list which is advancing students skills. I know that often the meaning behind the work is thought to be more important then the aesthetics of the piece however, if the artist audience doesn't understand the piece than is the artist reaching their goal? Another important aspect is channeling your emotions into your work. All people need a relief and art can be an amazing outlet. I had a teacher who told me a story about when he was in college. His professor wanted them to put their emotions into the piece and my teacher didn't like the project so he made a little angry ceramic man to show his distaste. Often times students are stressed, overworked, or depressed from something in their lives. They feel powerless and useless. Art if taught properly could give them a way to dispel some of these feelings. Moving forward I think that teaching about a wide range of artists and works is important. I learned about Van Gogh, Da Vinci and their works almost every year. When I came to college I found that there were so many artist that I had never heard of. Even if we only expose students to a wider variety of artists and works I think that it'll make a big difference. I also think that it is important to show students that art is a learned skill. I cant tell you how many people have looked at my work and said "Wow, you're so lucky you can draw like that. I can barely draw a stick figure." There was a day that none of us could draw stick figures. Art is a skill that the more you work at the better you get and I think that it is important that students know that. 

The animation is meant to show several things. One is the variety of media I plan to teach. This is shown through the individual objects that evolve from each other. Of course these are not the only media I plan to teach but I think that I would teach new media that no other teachers in the school were using. Second is the adaptation of students skills (shown by the changing of objects). The object changing is also meant to show how the skills of the student change as well. Third is the journey your emotions take. This is shown by the path that the objects follow as they change and evolve.
